  9. WHAT UPDATE.EXE IS
  10. ******************

  12. To help you maintain current protection against computer viruses,
  13. including the newly discovered macro viruses, Symantec is distributing
  14. UPDATE.EXE.  This program updates your already installed Norton AntiVirus
  15. version 3.0 to the latest detection capabilities.

  19. WHAT UPDATE.EXE DOES
  20. ********************

  22. UPDATE.EXE first examines the NAV installation on your local
  23. machine to determine if it is the Windows standalone workstation
  24. or Network Manager version. It then extracts the appropriate files.

  28. FLOPPY DISK REQUIREMENTS
  29. ************************
  30.  
  31. You can extract files to a temporary directory on your
  32. hard disk, or to blank, formatted floppy disks. If extracting
  33. to disks, you will need the following:
  34.  
  35. Format:                   1.44Mb
  36. -------                   ------
  37. Disks Needed (Windows):     3
  38. Disks Needed (Net Mgr):     4
  39.  
  40. (If you need 1.2Mb installation diskettes, contact Symantec
  41. Customer Service.)
  42.  
  43. NOTE: TO EXTRACT THE NETWORK MANAGER VERSION OF NAV, YOU MUST HAVE
  44. EITHER NAVNET.EXE OR NAVNETW.EXE IN THE FIRST NAV DIRECTORY IN YOUR
  45. PATH.  IF NEITHER OF THESE FILES ARE IN THAT DIRECTORY, YOU MUST
  46. COPY THEM FROM YOUR NETWORK MANAGER INSTALLATION DIRECTORY.  SEE
  47. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS BELOW FOR USING UPDATE.EXE TO UPDATE YOUR
  48. NETWORK MANAGER INSTALLATION OF NAV.

  51. UPDATING PROCEDURE
  52. ******************

  54. Please read this procedure before you complete it.
  55.  
  56. To update your NAV version:
  57.  
  58. 1. Scan with your installed NAV version to verify that you
  59.    are not infected.
  60.  
  61. 2. Type the following command at the DOS prompt, and
  62.    press Enter:
  63.  
  64.     UPDATE [DESTDIR]
  65.  
  66.    where [DESTDIR] represents the path where the files required for
  67.    installation will be placed. This should be a temporary directory.
  68.    
  69.    (NOTE: DO NOT SPECIFY THE DIRECTORY WHERE YOUR CURRENT NAV VERSION
  70.     RESIDES AS THE DESTINATION DIRECTORY).
  71.  
  72.    The files are extracted to the destination you specify. If extracting
  73.    to floppy disks, label them sequentially (#1, #2, #3, and so forth)
  74.    as they are created.
  75.  
  76. 3. When all files are extracted, change to the drive and directory
  77.    where they reside.
  78.  
  79.    You can now run the standard installation program.
  80.  
  81.    (NOTE: DO NOT INSTALL THE WINDOWS STANDALONE WORKSTATION VERSION OVER
  82.     A COPY OF NETWORK MANAGER. TO ENSURE THAT YOU ARE INSTALLING NAV NETWORK
  83.     MANAGER, CHECK THE EXTRACTED INSTALLATION FILES FOR NAVUPDAT.* AND
  84.     NAVNET*.*)

  86. 4. Type INSTALL.EXE and press Enter to complete the upgrade process.

  90. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR USERS OF THE NETWORK MANAGER VERSION OF NAV
  91. ********************************************************************

  93. To extract the Network Manager version of NAV, you must have either
  94. NAVNET.EXE or NAVNETW.EXE in the first NAV directory in your path.
  95. If neither of these files are in that directory, you must copy them
  96. from your Network Manager installation directory.
  97.  
  98. Before installing, make sure that you have extracted the appropriate
  99. files.  To ensure that you are installing NAV Network Manager, check
  100. the extracted installation files for NAVUPDAT.* and NAVNET*.*
  101.  
  102. Please note that this update modifies _DEFAULT.NNS.  In addition to
  103. installing the update, you must modify your custom *.NNS files using
  104. a text editor with the following changes:
  105.  
  106. In the section [InstallFiles], add these lines
  107.    NAVEX.DAT
  108.    NAVEX16.DLL
  109.  
  110. In the section [DefinitionUpdateFiles], add these lines
  111.    NAVEX.DAT
  112.    NAVEX16.DLL
  113.  
  114. These files replace the functionality of all previous special
  115. detection and repair files VIRSP??.DAT that are distributed with the
  116. monthly definitions.
  117.  
  118. You do not need to remove any existing lines from any *.NNS file.
