- ******************
- WHAT UPDATE.EXE IS
- ******************
-
- To help you maintain current protection against computer viruses,
- including the newly discovered macro viruses, Symantec is distributing
- UPDATE.EXE. This program updates your already installed Norton AntiVirus
- version 3.0 to the latest detection capabilities.
-
-
- ********************
- WHAT UPDATE.EXE DOES
- ********************
-
- UPDATE.EXE first examines the NAV installation on your local
- machine to determine if it is the Windows standalone workstation
- or Network Manager version. It then extracts the appropriate files.
-
-
- ************************
- FLOPPY DISK REQUIREMENTS
- ************************
-
- You can extract files to a temporary directory on your
- hard disk, or to blank, formatted floppy disks. If extracting
- to disks, you will need the following:
-
- Format: 1.44Mb
- ------- ------
- Disks Needed (Windows): 3
- Disks Needed (Net Mgr): 4
-
- (If you need 1.2Mb installation diskettes, contact Symantec
- Customer Service.)
-
- NOTE: TO EXTRACT THE NETWORK MANAGER VERSION OF NAV, YOU MUST HAVE
- EITHER NAVNET.EXE OR NAVNETW.EXE IN THE FIRST NAV DIRECTORY IN YOUR
- PATH. IF NEITHER OF THESE FILES ARE IN THAT DIRECTORY, YOU MUST
- COPY THEM FROM YOUR NETWORK MANAGER INSTALLATION DIRECTORY. SEE
- SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS BELOW FOR USING UPDATE.EXE TO UPDATE YOUR
- NETWORK MANAGER INSTALLATION OF NAV.
-
- ******************
- UPDATING PROCEDURE
- ******************
-
- Please read this procedure before you complete it.
-
- To update your NAV version:
-
- 1. Scan with your installed NAV version to verify that you
- are not infected.
-
- 2. Type the following command at the DOS prompt, and
- press Enter:
-
- UPDATE [DESTDIR]
-
- where [DESTDIR] represents the path where the files required for
- installation will be placed. This should be a temporary directory.
-
- (NOTE: DO NOT SPECIFY THE DIRECTORY WHERE YOUR CURRENT NAV VERSION
- RESIDES AS THE DESTINATION DIRECTORY).
-
- The files are extracted to the destination you specify. If extracting
- to floppy disks, label them sequentially (#1, #2, #3, and so forth)
- as they are created.
-
- 3. When all files are extracted, change to the drive and directory
- where they reside.
-
- You can now run the standard installation program.
-
- (NOTE: DO NOT INSTALL THE WINDOWS STANDALONE WORKSTATION VERSION OVER
- A COPY OF NETWORK MANAGER. TO ENSURE THAT YOU ARE INSTALLING NAV NETWORK
- MANAGER, CHECK THE EXTRACTED INSTALLATION FILES FOR NAVUPDAT.* AND
- NAVNET*.*)
-
- 4. Type INSTALL.EXE and press Enter to complete the upgrade process.
-
-
- ********************************************************************
- SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR USERS OF THE NETWORK MANAGER VERSION OF NAV
- ********************************************************************
-
- To extract the Network Manager version of NAV, you must have either
- NAVNET.EXE or NAVNETW.EXE in the first NAV directory in your path.
- If neither of these files are in that directory, you must copy them
- from your Network Manager installation directory.
-
- Before installing, make sure that you have extracted the appropriate
- files. To ensure that you are installing NAV Network Manager, check
- the extracted installation files for NAVUPDAT.* and NAVNET*.*
-
- Please note that this update modifies _DEFAULT.NNS. In addition to
- installing the update, you must modify your custom *.NNS files using
- a text editor with the following changes:
-
- In the section [InstallFiles], add these lines
- NAVEX.DAT
- NAVEX16.DLL
-
- In the section [DefinitionUpdateFiles], add these lines
- NAVEX.DAT
- NAVEX16.DLL
-
- These files replace the functionality of all previous special
- detection and repair files VIRSP??.DAT that are distributed with the
- monthly definitions.
-
- You do not need to remove any existing lines from any *.NNS file.
